KCI - Design and Build Your Own Computer
Do you want to understand how computers are designed and built? This two-day class will give you the opportunity to do just that.
Day 1 will be an informational session to help you identify the selection criteria for the components of a computer system consistent with how you want to use the system. Each of the components will be discussed (processor, motherboard, hard drive, memory, optical drive, etc.) along with their influence on the overall system performance and cost. At the end if day 1, you will be able to specify a component list for the computer system that best suits your design.
On day 2, the class will guide you through a step-by-step process of computer construction based on the specifications developed on day 1. You will observe the construction process and practice hands-on installation of demo components. By the end of the class you will know the type of computer you will want to build, the necessary components, where and how to acquire them at the best prices, and how to install them easily and efficiently.
Location: Day 1 (the informational session) will be held at Krause Center for Innovation, Foothill College, room 4002. Day 2 (the hands-on construction session) will be held at Central Computers in Santa Clara, CA.
This course is appropriate for students in 6th grade and up.
